SEO and AEO in 2026: what actually moves the needle

Search traffic used to mean one thing: ranking on Google. Now a growing share of people get answers directly from AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews, without ever clicking through to a website. That's given rise to "AEO" — Answer Engine Optimization — sitting alongside traditional SEO rather than replacing it.

What hasn't changed

The fundamentals of SEO are still the fundamentals:

  • Fast-loading pages, especially on mobile
  • Clear, unique page titles and descriptions
  • Content that actually answers the question the visitor searched for
  • Other credible sites linking to yours

If a site is slow, thin on content, or indistinguishable from a hundred competitors, no amount of AEO tactics will fix that. AI answer engines are, in large part, still built on top of the same crawled and indexed web that traditional search is.

What AEO adds

AI answer engines don't rank ten blue links — they synthesize an answer, often from a handful of sources. What seems to help a page get pulled into that answer:

  • Structured, extractable content. Clear headings, direct answers near the top of a section, and content organized so a machine can lift a specific paragraph cleanly.
  • Structured data (schema.org markup). Marking up your organization, articles, and products explicitly, rather than relying on the crawler to infer it.
  • Specificity over volume. A precise, well-reasoned answer to a narrow question tends to get cited more than a broad, generic page trying to cover everything.
  • Consistency across the web. The same facts about your business — name, service area, contact details — appearing consistently across your site, directories, and social profiles.

The practical takeaway

Build the site for a person first: fast, clear, honest about what you do. Then layer in the technical details — semantic HTML, schema markup, clean metadata — that make it easy for both search crawlers and AI systems to understand and cite that content accurately. Chasing AEO tricks on top of a weak site rarely works; getting the fundamentals right usually pays off in both channels at once.
